The University of Sopron has been honored with a prestigious global sustainability award. On April 13, 2026, against the iconic backdrop of Cardiff Castle, the university was presented with the Green World Environment Award Global Silver. For twenty years, this award has been granted to the world’s greenest and most sustainable companies, universities, and communities.

This year’s event stood as a pinnacle of global environmental excellence, drawing over 500 entries from across the globe. In addition to achieving this high ranking in the Carbon Reduction category, the University of Sopron has been invited to serve as an official Ambassador for The Green Organisation. This role will allow the university’s international educational programs, research projects, and sustainability efforts to be showcased worldwide as global best practices. With this achievement, the University of Sopron has firmly cemented its place among the elite "Green Universities" of the world.

"The University of Sopron was the sole winner from Hungary, further validating our internationally recognized 'Green University' strategy," said Prof. Dr. Attila Fábián, Rector of the university. "Today’s ceremony is another extraordinary milestone, strengthening our position within the global elite of environmentally conscious higher education institutions. We look forward to officially accepting our Green World Ambassador appointment this November at the British Parliament in London."

The Green Organisation is an international, independent, non-profit environmental group that has spent decades encouraging the sharing of best practices among communities dedicated to sustainability. By joining this circle, the University of Sopron stands alongside previous winners and global giants such as Zurich Insurance Group, Aviva, Sony, and Bentley Motors.

The university secured its win with a submission titled "Climate+ Hat-trick – Footsteps Towards a Sustainable Future." This program focuses on three reinforcing pillars designed to simultaneously reduce emissions and increase carbon sequestration:

  • Energy Transition: Replacing fossil-based energy with biomass-based heat production, alongside building energy upgrades and solar panel systems.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Active carbon absorption through the "Forest of Loyalty" (Hűségerdő), a cyclical tree-planting initiative.
  • Sustainable Mobility: Implementing greener transportation solutions across the campus.

Looking toward 2030, the University of Sopron aims to be the definitive leader in the forest-based economy, climate adaptation, and sustainability within Central Europe, maintaining its indispensable role in Hungary’s green future.
