Strengthening Ties: Canadian Ambassador Visits the University of Sopron

Beyond strengthening the internationalization of the university, the visit aimed to revive historical ties and advance future cooperation in higher education.

During the meeting, Rector Prof. Dr. Attila Fábián welcomed the guests, noting that while the University of Sopron boasts centuries of tradition, its current focus is on modern, sustainable solutions. He highlighted the institution’s unique character, where forestry, wood sciences, economics, and the arts collaborate within a single academic community.

The Rector emphasized the pivotal role of the University of British Columbia (UBC). Following the 1956 Revolution, hundreds of Sopron students and professors were forced to flee their homeland, finding a new home in Vancouver. There, they were welcomed with open hearts, preserving not only Hungarian culture but also the "Selmec" student traditions while establishing the foundations of Canadian forestry education. While the connection between the two universities remained inactive for decades, consistent efforts over the past three years have made the partnership exceptionally close once again.

"Currently, two of our forestry students are conducting research at UBC through the Pannónia Scholarship. We intend to further deepen our educational and research cooperation," the Rector stated.

"Before 1956, the University of British Columbia did not have a forestry department. This is surprising, and it shows how much the Hungarians who arrived there were needed."

During the meeting, the university's faculty leaders introduced themselves to the Ambassador and his delegation, detailing the diverse portfolio that provides the University of Sopron's education with its unique character on both a national and international level.

A highlight of the meeting was a presentation by committee member Ákos Vörös on the activities of the University of Sopron's Vancouver Memorial Committee. Among various planned programs, he highlighted that in honor of the upcoming 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution, two matching wooden lookout towers are scheduled to be inaugurated this October - one in Vancouver and one in Sopron.
