The University of Sopron has successfully reached the finals of the 2026 International Green Gown Awards. The institution secured its finalist status in the Nature Positive category with its project entry titled "Rooted Futures – Rooted in Nature. Growing the Future. Connected living ecosystems across Hungary."
The International Green Gown Awards represent one of the most prestigious global recognitions for sustainability initiatives within higher education. Since their founding in 2014, the awards have grown into a premier accolade for the educational sector worldwide. Their primary mission is to showcase and bring international visibility to university and college projects that provide practical solutions to the challenges of sustainable operations, education, research, community awareness-raising, and environmental responsibility.
The awards are organized by EAUC – The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges, with the active support of Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability, the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative, the International Association of Universities, and the United Nations Environment Programme. This robust professional backing gives the finalist status exceptional weight, as submissions are evaluated within a highly competitive international field based on global sustainability standards.
The University of Sopron’s project connects remarkably well with international conservation and sustainability frameworks. According to the official description of the Nature Positive category, the award links directly to the Global Goal for Nature, which emphasizes halting and reversing nature loss by 2030. Furthermore, it aligns with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which was adopted at the UN Biodiversity Conference, COP15.
As a result, the project is much more than an institutional best practice; it is an initiative that actively contributes to global biodiversity conservation efforts, international nature restoration commitments, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It ties in closely with quality education, climate action, life on land, and partnerships for sustainable development. The role of nature-based solutions is given a bright spotlight here, as the Nature Positive category underscores that healthy ecosystems are vital not only for preserving biodiversity but also for combating climate change.
The University of Sopron’s finalist entry is built directly upon the institution’s own natural assets and green infrastructure. The central pillars of the project are the Botanical Garden in Sopron and the arboretums in Kámon, Sárvár, and Püspökladány. Together, these sites form a nationwide, living ecological network that showcases Hungary's diverse environmental characteristics. By intertwining education, research, biodiversity conservation, and public awareness, the project demonstrates how university-managed green infrastructure can serve as a practical, real-world arena for nature-positive thinking.
Reaching the finals offers invaluable international professional feedback, proving that the University of Sopron’s Green University initiatives, living collections, and conservation-focused programs hold genuine value within a global sustainability context. The finalists were officially announced on June 4, 2026, and the overall winners and highly commended entries will be revealed on September 7, 2026.
