The University of Sopron’s conservation and sustainability initiative has reached the finals of the prestigious International Green Gown Awards 2026, competing in the Nature Positive category. The university has successfully submitted its final, second-round application materials to the international judging panel.
The project – titled “Rooted Futures – Rooted in Nature. Growing the Future: Connected Living Ecosystems Across Hungary” – showcases the university’s long-term commitment to nature-based solutions, the development of ecological networks, and a sustainable, biodiversity-supporting approach to higher education.
The University of Sopron's finalist entry leverages the institution's rich natural assets and green infrastructure. At its heart are the Botanical Garden in Sopron and the arboretums of Kámon, Sárvár, and Püspökladány. Together, across various ecological landscapes, these sites demonstrate the diverse possibilities of biodiversity conservation, research, and education throughout Hungary.
A Major International Milestone
The International Green Gown Awards are among the world's most prestigious sustainability honors in higher education, recognizing institutions that achieve outstanding results in sustainable development and environmental responsibility. Reaching the finals is a massive international milestone in its own right, as the best initiatives are selected from a highly competitive pool of universities worldwide.
What’s next? The winners are expected to be announced on September 7, 2026.
