A special ceremony marked an important milestone at the University of Sopron, where the first group of international peer supporters received their adult training certificates.
This unique initiative in Hungarian higher education focuses on mental well-being and student support, providing international students with the opportunity to gain structured training in peer support. The training was organized by the StudentHelp program of the International Office, with the professional and continuous support of the Student Support Service.
Altogether 11 international students successfully completed the training, which was delivered within the framework of adult education. The participants received their certificates during a ceremonial event held on a sunny spring day, March 18.
During the program, students learned the foundations of peer support from experienced professionals, including a clinical psychologist, an intercultural expert, educators, and mental health specialists.
The first cohort of certified international peer supporters includes students from diverse countries such as Kazakhstan, Syria, Peru, St Lucia, Nigeria, Morocco, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and the Dominican Republic, representing various faculties and levels of study.
Peer supporters play a vital role in university life: they act as a bridge between fellow students, academic staff, and the university’s support services. They provide guidance, emotional support, and a direct, approachable connection for students in need—while also developing their own personal and professional skills.
“Be the light of your peers,” the StudentHelp coordinator encouraged the newly certified peer supporters, who will continue their work supporting the international student community.
This first group not only marks the beginning of a new initiative but also sets an inspiring example for future participants, strengthening the culture of care and connection at the University of Sopron.
