The University of Sopron has achieved a major international milestone by winning the Green World Environment Award. This global competition seeks out the "greenest" companies and communities in the world. Standing out from over 500 nominations, the university will be honored with a Green World Award and certificate at a formal ceremony hosted at the iconic Cardiff Castle in Wales on April 13, 2026.
The Green World Awards are organized by The Green Organisation, an international, independent, and non-profit environmental body. Since 1994, the organization has dedicated itself to recognizing and showcasing initiatives that make a real, measurable impact on environmental sustainability. Their award system encourages the spread of best practices, providing a roadmap for other organizations to follow.

The University of Sopron’s success is particularly noteworthy given the caliber of past and present winners. The official winner lists include global powerhouses such as Saudi Aramco, Reliance Industries, Zurich Insurance Group, and Aviva, as well as household names like Sony (Sony UK Technology Centre) and Bentley Motors. In the higher education sector, the university joins an elite group of previous honorees, including Oxford Brookes University, Yale School of the Environment, the University of Birmingham, and the University of Hull.

The university’s winning entry focused on the "Climate+ Hat-trick – Footsteps Towards a Sustainable Future" program—a science-based, complex initiative with transparent results. This program is a pioneer in Hungary, making the University of Sopron the first higher education institution in the country to implement a carbon-positive operating model.
The strategy rests on three reinforcing pillars designed to simultaneously reduce emissions and increase carbon sequestration:
- Energy Transition: Replacing fossil-fuel energy with biomass-based heat production, building modernizations, and solar energy systems.
- Active Carbon Absorption: The "Forest of Loyalty" (Hűségerdő) program, which has seen nearly 6,000 trees planted since 2021.
- Sustainable Mobility: Creating a car-free campus environment and launching the UNI-SOPRON BIKE fleet.

Together, these measures reduce CO₂ emissions by thousands of tons annually and ensure significant carbon capture, securing the university’s carbon-positive status for the long term.
In line with the environmental values of the ceremony in Wales, local organizers will plant trees to offset the carbon footprint of the event itself.
Winning the Green World Environment Award perfectly mirrors the University of Sopron’s core philosophy: to constantly seek new challenges and address them with innovative, measurable, and sustainable solutions.
