When registering for the Spring Semester Welcome Day event, most international students voted for the traditional semester closing event with cooking on a campfire at Lake Salamandra near Sopron in early May. However, following control measures to fight Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) in Győr-Moson-Sopron county, we were not able to stick to this traditional event. We offered our students a one-day excursion to the Jeli Arboretum, also called Wonder Garden, and to Sárvár Boating Lake instead.

"The spring excursion was a wonderful way to end the semester. The weather was amazing, and we went to the best place to celebrate it: Jeli Arboretum. There were beautiful flowers, fresh air, and bamboo trees I saw for the first time. We were guided through the arboretum and afterward, ate delicious pancakes at the Boating Lake in Sárvár. We ended the day with a city tour and a visit to the castle. We connected with our international friends once more, we walked in nature, and we had a lot of fun. It was a beautiful spring day. "As the weather gets warmer and the flowers start to blossom, I find myself spending more time outdoors, and when I found out about a school trip to a botanical garden and lake, I was delighted to attend. We started our trip at the Jeli Arboretum, a peaceful and pleasant botanical garden filled with a variety of different plants. I enjoyed the walk through the large forest and really liked the purple flowers spread throughout the park. The large bamboo rods were a memorable sight as it's quite unusual to see, especially in this region. Our tour guide described everything around us and even told the story of why pinecones have a sort of protective shell, which I did not know before. We followed up our lovely walk with delicious palacsintas by the lake. This delicious treat was my favorite part. I loved the sweet taste of the strawberry-flavored palacsinta topped with chocolate sauce and sprinkles. We ended our day with a delightful walk around the lake towards the city center. There was a nice square and a castle built long ago. I enjoyed the day, and I cannot wait to see where the university will bring us next!" (Charles Budman, Faculty of Economics)
