logo_SMAFC.pngThe Sopron Sports Association of the University of Sopron (SMAFC) was founded in Selmecbánya in 1860 and from that time it has continuously operated as Europe’s second and Hungary’s oldest sports association. SMAFC stands for the Sopron University Club for Athletics and Football whose basketball players made it legendary. The treasured name of SMAFC stems from the fact that from 1934 until 1952 the mining, metallurgical and forestry faculties were part of the József Nádor University of Technology and Economics. Today we still continue to use the cherished name of SMAFC.

The basketball club of SMAFC enriched the history of the university with a number of athletic successes. In the academic year of 1948-49, the legendary basketball team won the second division with no losses. For years they played in the first division, among the best teams for the Hungarian championship in first division. By 1962 an outstanding team was assembled under the leadership of Ferenc Krasznai and had one success after another in the next ten years. In 1969 they were the first team outside Budapest who won the Hungarian People’s Republic Cup. This was particularly noteworthy since in most first division teams some professionals were playing, but in SMAFC there were only unpaid university students. Ferenc Krasznai’s work was crowned with the selection of several of his players as members of the Hungarian national team. The present sports centre and a basketball tournament are both named after this famous coach.

From that time it has continuously operated as one of Europe’s oldest sports association. Today excellent results have been achieved in the association’s karate (European Championship gold medals), riding, chess, ski (World Championship silver medals) and orienteering sections too.

In addition to basketball, the university had outstanding results, winning gold medals in the European karate championship, silver medals in horse riding, chess and skiing. We have also had athletic success in orienteering.

We are offering you several sport activities in the afternoons such as ball games and aerobic. Free swimming tickets are also available.

HOW TO GET HERE...

...FROM BUDAPEST

After arriving to the airport of Budapest the first thing youmust do is to change about 50 Euros into Forint (Hungarian currency). Now you have about 20,000 Forint with you. Usually, the exchange rate at airports is a bit higher than in the city. However, bank card is also accepted almost everywhere.

After that, you need to go to the main train station – called Keleti Pályaudvar – where you can take a direct train to Sopron. At the airport you can choose from two transfer options: either you can take a taxi at the airport or you can use public transport. The first one is obviously quicker but more expensive (should cost around 10,000 Forint, takes about 25 minutes), while the public transport, bus 100E - runs every 10 minutes at daytime, every 30-40 minutes at night - it is much cheaper (1,500 Forint) + Merto M2 (Astoria) or M4 (Kálvin tér) (400 Forint). If you decide to take a bus & subway in Budapest, you can search for routes and connections on this page:

[ BKK Futar ]

If you already know the exact date of your arrival, please visit the following website for trains from Budapest to Sopron:
[ Hungarian Railway ONLINE TICKETING ]

Not only will you find information about trains on the site, but also you can book your ticket online. You can also get the Sopron train ticket (not more than 6,000 Forint) from the officers at the sales point at Keleti Pályaudvar (main building).
At Sopron train station, equally there are taxis which can take you to the dormitory called “VUK” (Address: 9400 Sopron, Baross utca 4-6.) or you can get there on foot (around 15-20 minutes). Depending on your day of arrival, the mentors can even meet you at the Sopron train station if it is necessary.

If you choose to travel to Vienna Airport instead of Budapest, you can check this website:
[ ÖBB Ticket and Services portal ]
One way to get to the main train station – called Wien Hauptbahnhof – from the airport is that you take a train to the main station. The other option is taking the city railway S7 at the airport. It leaves at the 18th and 48th minutes of every hour. Travel until the 7th stop called Rennweg. You have 5 minutes to change the platform and to take the city railway S3. Travel until the stop Wien Hauptbahnhof, then change the train with the destination of Deutschkreuz. Sopron is the 10th stop. To see the timetable of trains going to Deutschkreutz, please use the above-mentioned link.

At Sopron train station, equally there are taxis which can take you to the dormitory called “VUK” (Address: 9400 Sopron, Baross utca 4-6.) or you can get there on foot (takes around 15-20 minutes). If you choose a taxi to take you to the dormitory then you should change around 20 Euros into Forint (Hungarian currency). You can find a currency exchange office near the Sopron train station called “Limit Change Pénzváltó”. Depending on your day of arrival, the mentors can even meet you at the Sopron train station if it is necessary.

THE CENTRAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOPRON

ugrás az oldal tetejére

The archives are guardians of history. In general, they collect and preserve documents, records which have historical importance in order to save them for the future and make the historical sources avaliable for the public, especially for the researchers. Besides that, the archives have an official role, too.

The Central Archives of the University of Sopron was established in 1984, within the Central Library of the University. We collect, organize, preserve and provide access to a comprehensive records of the life of the university and its predecessors. From 19th century documents and registers to nowadays, Our collections comprise cca. 600 linear meter of University records and related historical materials, and they are growing continuously.

This activity is tied to the record management services for University of Sopron staff, administrators and faculties. We preserve the archive documents and records of the Rektorate; the Faculties and their departments; other university organs and bureaus.

Our oldest document dates back to 1848. The earliest matricula in our archives is attached to the foresty class in 1861/1862. The archive groups (fonds) of registrated records of the Rektorate begins from 1896: The records of the Schemnitz-period are incomplete because of the flight in 1919. In 1949 the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy was separated from Sopron Faculties, and a new university was established in Miskolc from that. The Faculty of Forestry stayed in Sopron and it was attached to the University of Agronomy, and from 1952 this faculty operated as an independent Forestry College with an university rank. At the 1960’s the records and documents of the predecessor of the university were shared between the University of Miskolc and the Forestry College (the later University of Forestry and Wood Sciences). Nowadays there is a good relationship between the archives of the successors: we exchange the copies of the most significant documents of each others collection. We are cooperating with other university archives and the Archives of Sopron too.

Cca. 20-30 researchers visit us annually to find some information about science, education, university and personal history and we answer a plenty of official questions.

At the Archives, the documents and records are organized in 73 fonds. In this fonds can be found:

  • Registrated records and documents of the Rektorate, the Financial Bureau, the Faculty of Forestry, the Faculty of Wood Sciences, some departments and other university organs.
  • Student matriculas and other educational documents.
  • Minutes of meetings of the University and its Faculties.
  • Other documents related to the university life.
  • Legacy of some former professors.

Collections:

  • Non-official papers and documents
  • Photos about the university life

LIBRARY MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Central Library and the member libraries is supporting the learning and searching activities carried out on the university, supporting intellectual and personal needs of users by providing free access to information and knowledge resources, offering instructional program to help and assist improving skills and competencies for use information sources. The library takes part in knowledge society improving by enchancing and supporting life-long learning.

HISTORY OF THE CENTRAL LIBRARY

The Central Library of the University of Sopron is one of the oldest reference libraries of Hungary. It was established at the time of the foundation of the first Hungarian School for Training Mining Officers in Selmecbánya. This school was created to meet the needs of the era, and it was approved by a statute laid down by the Treasury on 22nd June, 1735. The organisational and educational regulations, the founding document of the school, aimed to serve the entire monarchy's goals, required "the acquisition of studies written by noted authors" stating their titles. It required the students to "read out loud the studies acquired by the mining school in their free time". The library began to function with the founding of the school.

When Maria Theresa laid down the terms of the academic education from 1762 to 1770, Selmecbánya became one of the major scientific centres of Europe, teaching mining-metallurgical, related mathematical, geodetical-cartographical, chemical, geological, forestry and national economic sciences. The development of the library was in the interest of students who were devoted to these sciences. At the Selmecbánya Academy, the following excellent scientists lectured: Jacquin, Delius, Peithner, Poda, Scopoli, Patzier, Doppler, Wilckens, Feistmantel, Schwarz, etc. They all wanted to fill the shelves of the library with the books of Euclid, Euler, Tabernaemontanus, Segner, Mariotte, Bernoulli, Leupold, Belidor, Galilei, Boyle, Ampére, Faraday, Gay-Lussac, Linné, Buffon, Carlovitz, A. Humboldt, Calvör, Cramer, etc. The holdings of the library were expanded from the 1770s. There were significant book acquisitions, and the expansion of the holdings became a permanent task.

When the Forestry School was established in 1808, the acquisition of special literature expanded to the new scientific fields of study, although it can be documented that earlier they had obtained and used special forestry literature. One of the duties of the teaching assistants of forestry was to "take care of" the library. There are records of librarians and their sphere of activity going back to 1841. The activities on behalf of the library of Frigyes Schwarz, who was both a forestry professor and a mining councillor, and of Károly Wagner, senior lecturer, have to be commemorated. Thanks to them it is possible to track the development and the classification of the holdings based on the book of inventory from 1862. The classified order was as follows:

  1. Mathematics
  2. Physics-Chemistry
  3. Mineralogy
  4. Mineralogy
  5. Mining Engineering
  6. Metallurgy
  7. Salt mining
  8. Numismatics
  9. Forestry
  10. Technology
  11. Miscellaneous Scientific Studies
  12. Literature
  13. Maps

After the Compromise of 1867 the official language of the education became Hungarian, and the institution became a state institution, but the area from which it attracted students was reduced. The development of the library slowed down as well. Probably this was because the Hungarian forestry professional language and literature had to be created first. Károly Wagner and Adolf Divald played a major role in this process.

By the turn of the 19th-20th centuries the former development and the balanced acquisition of the library was re-established. The amount of the Hungarian professional literature increased considerably, particularly the amount of forestry books and journals. They also acquired social science holdings in this period.

World War I and the subsequent events set back the development. The library moved with the Institution to Sopron in 1919, but it was not able to function for several years after that. The whereabouts of the historical holdings remained unknown. However it is known for certain, that the Archabbey in Pannonhalma preserved the most valuable works for a long period.

After years of difficulties and organisational changes, the future of the library was finally back on track when World War II broke out. The original library holdings were to have been transported to Germany, but instead the most precious rarities were hidden in a secret place. The holdings survived the war, but because of the lack of personnel, the functioning of the library faced a lot of difficulties.

Between 1949 and 1962 there were many changes in the functioning of the school affecting the fate of the library's holdings. The Faculties of Mining Engineering and Metallurgy had to move to the Heavy Industry Technical University founded in Miskolc. At that time the library remained in Sopron, as the library of the Agricultural University's Faculty of Forestry. Later it became the library of the Forestry College. At the same time it had two roles. It had to manage the holdings of the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy until the resettlement to Miskolc was concluded. The original holdings had to be divided, which led to a number of disputes and difficulties. Since 1952, the forestry library has been separated from the mining- metallurgical engineering reference library.

THE CENTRAL LIBRARY IN THE PRESENT - SERVICES

The Central Library of the University of Sopron is a professional information institute. It is a public, academic, educational, technical library. It works as a central organisiational unit at the University of Sopron.

The University of Sopron established a Central Library and a public collection network. The Central Library has remained the central organisational unit at the university. It serves the educational and research activities of the Faculty of Forestry, the Alexandre Lamfalussy Faculty of Economics and the Benedek Elek Faculty of Pedagogy. The Central Library is the centre of the library network maintained by the university. Parts of the network are the libraries of the faculties, the institutions and the departments. The library network of the university is one of the most important information bases for its scientific activities. It is involved in educational and research tasks.

Besides the traditional library services the library has to keep up with current technical developments. It can provide state-of-the-art services due to its information technology systems, to the co-operating reference libraries, and by belonging to the national information system of the libraries.

The library collects documents from diferrent areas: forestry, wood industry, geodesy, wildlife management, economics, pedagogy, pscihology, social sciences, arts etc.. The stock of our library comes out at about 320.000 pieces of documents.

Catalouging the whole stock is continual. Nowadays at about 70 % of the whole stock can be searched in our OPAC (online public access catalogue) by the bibliographic datas (author, title, subject etc.). The rest of the stock can be searched certainly in the traditional catalouges.

Our library uses the Corvina integrated librarian system.
Corvina is a hungarian version of the Voyager integrated librarian system, which is used by the Library of Congress in Washington. The base of this system is the USMARC format.

RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR THE PURPOSE OF STUDY

ugrás az oldal tetejére

As you have all travelled to Hungary, it means you had been successfully accepted to this university and made another successful application to the Immigration Office.

Most of you are 3rd country nationals which means your original residence is not in the Member States of the European Union or in the European Economic Area (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein).

According to the law each 3rd country national who prefers to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days within a 180 day period needs to apply for a residence permit. You will all get a residence permit card that allows you to stay here legally for the period of your studies.

After arriving to Hungary, you still have some tasks, as all of you who gave in the application at a consulate need to come to the Immigration Office for taking their biometric data that means we take your fingerprints and take a photo. We need this because your residence permit card is biometric. So once your biometric data have been taken we send them to Budapest where they produce the cards and send them to the university so you can collect them later. Producing the card usually takes 10-15 days. You don’t need to worry until that as you all have your D visa in your passport which is valid for 30 days after entering Hungary. Although sometimes the residence permit card is not ready and your 30 day visa expires, in this case you need to come to the Immigration Office with a passport photo and we make a temporary residence permit for you.

After that the only thing you need to concentrate on is your studies.

When your residence permit card is about to expire – it means at least 30 days before it expires - and you still have some semesters left, you shall come to the Immigration Office and make an extension. The fee charged for the extension of a residence permit is HUF 10,000 - payable by bank card or by yellow cheque supplied by us. There is an exception though for the students who owe the STIPENDIUM HUNGARICUM or HUNGARY HELPS scholarship as their procedure is free of the administrative service fee.

A successful extension

First, you fill in the application form – which is a general form – and Appendix 14 that shows your purpose of study. What is very important: you can ask your residence permit for not longer than a 2 year period. So even if you fill it in with a 3 year period, we cannot give it to you for more than 2 years. Also, we cannot give it to you longer as your study/scholarship lasts. While filling in the form it’s not compulsory to put an end date as we always give out the residence permits for as long as it can be.

For the extension you need to attach the followings:

From everyone:

  • certificate of student status
  • bank account statement regarding the last  3 months
  • if your address hasn’t changed the copy of the accommodation registration card, if it has changed, a new registration card and a rental contract.

If you are a student with Stipendium Hungaricum or Hungary Helps scholarship, the letter of award

If you need to pay educational fees or dormitory fees because you don’t owe a scholarship you shall provide a certificate about paying issued by the university, and also a comprehensive health insurance, proof of savings on bank account

About the procedure:

It takes 15 days if everything in your file is all right.

During the process, the immigration office may request further documents, apart from the compulsory ones, and may take further procedural steps as well. The administrative time limit shall not include the length of time between the time you receive the notice until the time you need to send in the missing documents. After the application is submitted you shall be able to attach documents by way of post or by e-mail. In case you don’t send the missing documents in the given time we have to terminate your case according to the law and you shall give in a new application. Although that might cause some complications.

So, once again the validity period of a residence permit issued for the purpose of study should be given for maximum of 2 years or until the end of your studies. The validity period of a residence permit may not exceed the validity period of your passport.

Unfortunately there are cases when we have to refuse an application. In case of refusal, you can make an appeal within 8 days of delivery at the Immigration Office. If the applicant introduces any new evidence in the appeal, of which he/she was aware before the decision was adopted, or if the appeal is lodged without showing cause, the Office shall dismiss the appeal without any examination.  The administrative service fee for the appeal is HUF 5,500, payable by bank card or by yellow cheque supplied by us.

Some reasons that make us refuse your residence permit extension:

  • if you have given false information or untrue facts in the interest of obtaining the right of residence, or misled the authority in respect of the purpose of residence;
  • if you suffer from any disease that is considered to constitute a threat to public health, and refuses to submit to the appropriate compulsory medical treatment;
  • if you are unable to meet the conditions set out by law;
  • if you failed to report the particulars of a genuine place of accommodation in Hungary.
  • if you don’t obtain the certificate within one and half times the period of time fixed for basic academic and examination requirements.

Other useful things to know:

  • You with a valid residence permit have the right of entry without a visa and the right of residence in the territory of Schengen Member States not exceeding ninety days within a one hundred and eighty day period.
You can have a job while you are studying. During your term-time for maximum twenty-four hours weekly, and outside your term-time for a maximum period of ninety days or sixty-six working days in a year.

  • You shall carry the accommodation registration card on you at all times. It’s best if you put it in your wallet or passport. When you change your location or your address you shall notify the Immigration office within three days.

  • You have to report in writing without delay to the immigration authority if your passport or residence permit is lost, stolen or destroyed.
